چکیده

HD149026b is a short-period, Saturn-mass planet that transits a metalrich star. The planet radius, determined by photometry, is remarkably small compared to other known transiting planets, with a heavy element core that apparently comprises ∼ 70% of the total planet mass. Time series spectra were obtained at Keck before and during transit in order to model the RossiterMcLaughlin effect. Here, we make use of these observations to carry out a differential comparison of spectra obtained in and out-of-transit to search for signatures of neutral atomic lithium and potassium from the planet atmosphere. No signal was detected at the 2% level; we therefore place upper limits on the column density of these atoms. Subject headings: planetary systems — stars: individual (HD 149026) — transit effects Based on observations obtained at the W. M. Keck Observatory, which is operated by the University of California and the California Institute of Technology. Keck time has been granted by NASA. ELODIE metallicity - biased search for transiting Hot Jupiters ⋆ II . A very hot Jupiter transiting the bright K star HD 189733

Among the 160 known exoplanets, mainly detected in large radial-velocity surveys, only 8 have a characterization of their actual mass and radius thanks to the two complementary methods of detection: radial velocities and photometric transit. We started in March 2004 an exoplanet-search programme biased toward high-metallicity stars which are more frequently host extra-solar planets. This survey...

Near-infrared Transit Photometry of the Exoplanet Hd 149026b

The transiting exoplanet HD 149026b is an important case for theories of planet formation and planetary structure, because the planet’s relatively small size has been interpreted as evidence for a highly metal-enriched composition. We present observations of 4 transits with the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer on the Hubble Space Telescope within a wavelength range of 1.1–2.0 ...

Detecting Life-bearing Extra-solar Planets with Space Telescopes

One of the promising methods to search for life on extra-solar planets (exoplanets) is to detect life’s signatures in their atmospheres. Spectra of exoplanet atmospheres at the modest resolution needed to search for oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, and methane will demand large collecting areas and large diameters to capture and isolate the light from planets in the habitable zones around the sta...

Spectroscopic Studies of Transiting Planetary Systems

As of December 2007, radial velocity measurements and planetary transit surveys for nearby stars have already identified more than 250 planets around other stars. These “extrasolar planets” opened a new field of astronomy in the past decade. The discovery of many extrasolar planets have revealed the existence of exotic planets such as “hot Jupiters” and “eccentric planets,” showing the diversit...

Towards the Albedo of an Exoplanet: MOST Satellite Observations of Bright Transiting Exoplanetary Systems

The Canadian MOST satellite is a unique platform for observations of bright transiting exoplanetary systems. Providing nearly continuous photometric observations for up to 4 weeks, MOST can produce important observational data to help us learn about the properties of exosolar planets. We review our current observations of HD 209458 and HD 189733 with implications for the albedo and our progress...
